Norton AntiVirus Review

Norton AntiVirus is a software package from Symantec that provides automated virus protection. Noreton AntiVirus provides the security of automatic protection against viruses, malicious ActiveX controls and Java applets, and other dangerous code.

It protects you while you're surfing the Internet or getting information from floppy disks, CDs, or a network. It also automatically scans incoming attachments in the most popular email programs. It is extremely easy to keep updated, with automatic retrieval of new antivirus definitions from Symantec as often as once a week. Norton AntiVirus is sold as a standalone product and is also included as part of Norton Internet Security and Norton SystemWorks. Real-time protection reduces the risk of viruses reaching the system, while automatic removal enables easy disposal of security risks. Norton AntiVirus is the amongst the world's most-trusted antivirus solutions. Norton Antivirus is easy to get up and running, and it does a better job than most of its competitors at providing useful information in pop-up alerts. Symantec's virus notifications identify specific threats and let users knows in clear language why they should be concerned and what they should do. This antivirus software not only detects offline virus and spyware and protect the PC from infections but is also active in the background while you are surfing the net. Norton AntiVirus is also thorough in finding malware. It caught every test case when tested by macworld.com, including a piece of Linux malware. Norton AntiVirus is the only anti-virus product on the market that includes Script Blocking technology to proactively detect fast-moving script-based viruses such as the I Love You and Anna Kournikova viruses, without the need for virus definitions. Symantec's exclusive LiveUpdate technology helps protect against the latest threats by automatically checking for new virus definitions and downloading them to your computer over the Internet. With Script Blocking technology and automatic LiveUpdate, Norton AntiVirus users are uniquely protected against known and unknown virus threats. The main reasons are that the company behind it, Symantec, is a huge organization, and as such has the money and employees to ensure their research and technology is second to none.

Independent Lab Testing

In the latest test results from AV-Comparatives.org, for on-demand scans Norton AntiVirus 2007 earned an Advanced + (the highest) rating, catching 98 percent of all malware tested; and for the Retrospective/Proactive test, Norton AntiVirus 2007 earned an Advanced (second-highest) rating, detecting almost half the backdoors, Trojans, and other malware sampled. Norton AntiVirus 2007 received a Standard rating from CheckVir.com, meaning only the virus searching capability was examined.

The Not So Good

There are a few areas where Norton AntiVirus falls a little short. Whilst Norton AntiVirus is reasonably well priced compared to similar offers from it's competitors for a single year licence, it provides only a minimal discount on multi-year renewals. Whilst it may seem alright to use an old version of Norton AntiVirus, the virus and malware writers are working all the time to defeat the antivirus software so you need the latest engines and definitions at all time. Norton AntiVirus has been around 18 years and is up to its 15th version. In that time Symantec has added a lot of bells and whistles to Norton AntiVirus making it a very large software package. Some people feel that it takes too much memory and uses too much CPU compared to other more slim-line options.

Uninstalling Norton AntiVirus

One of the points of criticism with Norton AntiVirus has been that it is very hard to uninstall. Neither the Windows Control Panel nor the Norton AntiVirus unintaller completely remove the software from your system. In response to this, Symantec now provides a tool, the Norton Removal Tool, that will completely remove all traces of the Norton products from your PC.

The Final Word

Norton AntiVirus continues to be one of the best and most respected antivirus packages available. Symantec is a market leader in network and computer security and has significant resources to devote to the on-going development of Norton AntiVirus.
